Total Wellness and Mental Health

Your diet, what you do to take care of yourself and how you lead your life all have a direct impact on both physical and mental wellbeing. In fact, the immune system and our physiological status can be influenced by what we do on a daily basis.

Dr. Nick R.S. Hall at the University of South Florida lecturing on the Mind-Body connection offered the following guidelines for maintaining a healthy body and a positive and effective psychological state: Keep blood sugar low (fasting glucose = 100); Maintain low blood pressure (low salt diet); Keep cholesterol low (less than 200); Keep weight low and steady; Eat fewer calories; Eat mostly vegetables ( Mediterranean diet with coffee and tea); Avoid nutritional deficiencies; Exercise regularly; Don’t smoke or use alcohol; Get adequate sleep; Challenge your mind; Maintain a positive attitude; Avoid anxiety; Be resilient; Stay sexually connected; Seek serenity; Lead a purposeful life.

Dr. Hall’s guidelines allow us some level of introspection with regard to all of his suggestions regarding wellness and mindfulness.  If we are able to approximate these concepts and behaviors we can expect a longer healthier, happier and more successful life. At times we all might benefit from some confidential and personalized guidance. The Columbia Counseling Center’s mission, for the past forty years, has been to provide a caring, confidential and compassionate space in which to explore, clarify and rebalance our lives.
